How Dehydration and Stress Trigger Headaches
With Halloween around the corner, it’s easy to grab another pumpkin latte instead of a glass of water — but your body might have a spooky way of reminding you later.
I was rushing between errands and with the kids last week, and remembered around midday that I hadn’t had any water. Not even a sip.
Then what came the next day? A headache.
Here’s the kicker: the headache wasn’t from that days’ choices. It was from the day before. Dehydration doesn’t always hit right away. Your body runs like a reservoir, and when it’s low, it sends the signal hours later, sometimes weeks or months later. And it is not just water, stress has a big part to play too.
Those little signs… tension in your shoulders, fatigue, brain fog… are your early warnings. Ignore them, and a headache or any joint pain comes knocking.
The good news? Steady hydration can prevent a lot of this. Small sips throughout the day, electrolyte-rich foods, even water-packed fruits like oranges or cucumbers can make a big difference!
Build this habit and it will be rare you have days like I did recently, forgetting to drink any water.
And here’s a fun fact: your spinal discs are like little water cushions. Staying hydrated helps keep them plump, which means less stiffness, less nerve irritation, and fewer headaches.
Chiropractic adjustments also help your spine move and function properly so those discs can actually hold onto the hydration they need.
So if your head hurts today, you might just need to rewind and ask: How much water did I drink yesterday?
And if it’s been a while since your last adjustment, this is a great time to get checked and see if there’s a neuromusculoskeletal element to your headaches as well. Reach out anytime with questions. We’d love to help!
